A couple of weeks ago I got the chance to try some CBD infused products from Calm drinks. Having never tried anything with CBD, but suffering from anxiety meant I, of course, jumped at the chance.
Before I jump into the review, I just want to take a moment to talk about CBD. CBD is short for Cannabidiol, which is basically one of the Cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant. However, unlike THC, CBD is non psycho-active which means you cannot get high from it, and it is perfectly legal. Whilst I am not a medical professional and cannot make any medical claims, I can share my experience.
The coffee blends comes in a brown paper like bag, with a resealable tab to keep the coffee fresh. It has a valve at the front which is usually to let carbon dioxide out. This is something that all fresh coffee bags should have. On the back on the pack there are also instructions on how to brew he coffee and it clearly states not to exceed 3 cups a day. The cold blend comes in a beautiful cream coloured can, it is honestly one of the prettiest cans I have ever seen.
I loved the flavour of the premium blend, it is strong with an underlining taste of macademia nuts and noticeable notes of milk chocolate. Even before opening the pack you can smell how strong this coffee is. We have drank it as an espresso, a latte and even used it in a cheescake! I was very excited for the cold blend, but sadly taste wise, this was not for me. I found it a little too sweet, but my friend who has a sweet tooth loved it, so this is definitely more of a personal choice rather than a reflection on the coffee itself. In fact I am very eager for summer to arrive so I can enjoy some iced coffee using the coffee blend.
Does it work?
Having anxiety is something that affects me every day, I cope with it by doing breathing exercises and focusing on mindfulness. However I have noticed a real difference after drinking both the coffee and the cold blends. I wouldn’t say my anxiety was 100% gone, but I found myself coping better with things in general.
Would I buy it again?
Yes. At £14.95 per bag, the coffee blend isn’t exactly cheap and cheerful, but because of the effect it had on me I would repurchase. Maybe not as an everyday drink, but it’s definitely something I’d want to have in the house for days when I feel stressed. I’d also buy the Belgian Hot Chocolate, even though I haven’t tried it, as I think it would help me relax before bed.
Calm drinks has a wide range of CBD drinks which can be found on their website: https://www.calmdrinks.co.uk/
Finally I want to share a drink idea that is perfect for this cbd infused coffee: Lavender and Honey Latte.
This latte is easy to make and dairy free. I use oat milk, as it froths up almost as much as cow’s milk and has a smooth taste. Just like in my chamomile tea latte recipe, I am using a french press to make my foam.
CBD infused Honey and Lavender Latte
- French Press
- Small pot
- 2 tbsp Honey
- 1/2 tsp Lavender
- 2 tbsp Water
- 1/2 cup Oat Milk
- 2 Shots CBD infused espresso
- In a small pot add the honey, water. Stir and let it boil.
- Add the lavender and stir, take it off the heat and let it steep for 15-20 minutes.
- Strain the syrup and divide it between two cups
- Heat up your milk and pour it in a french press.
- Give the milk about 10-15 strong plunges so that it foams up
- Add your espresso to the cups and pour the foamed up milk on top
- Decorate with lavender seeds and a drizzle of honey
